Mini-Vacation

We took our mini-vacation with the kids this past weekend.  It consisted of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (or Krusty Kreme as Kylie kept calling it), Oceans of Fun/Worlds of Fun, swimming at our hotel, ordering Papa John's pizza and eating it off cardboard boxes, playing checkers (and Barbies and tractors that the kids packed in the suitcases), eating breakfast at the hotel before going to the Kansas City Zoo, and enjoying BBQ for lunch before heading home.
We got to Krispy Kreme at the wrong time and had to wait close to 20 minutes for the bread to get from the beginning of the cooking racks to the assembly line, but it was fun to see them go through the process, and it was worth it when I took a bite out of a warm, freshly baked Krispy Kreme donut!

I didn't keep my phone with me at Oceans of Fun for obvious reasons, so we were without any photos.  We asked a young girl in the parking lot to take our photo by the sign as we were leaving, and without any indication that she was taking the photo, she was already finished, hence the really bad picture of me with my eyes closed, Kaden looking scared, and Keane not quite ready.

We spent most of the day at Oceans of Fun, where Kaden and Keane rode Predators' Plunge which consisted of water slides in which you begin in a clear capsule and after a countdown, you are dropped vertically into the water slide so quickly that it takes your breath away.  I don't know this from first-hand experience though, because once we waited an hour or so to get to the top of the slide, Kylie decided she did not want to go.  Keane said that she made the right decision because it was scary enough that both Keane and Kaden said they would not ride it again.

We rode a family water slide, Hurricane Falls, on a raft down a big water slide, we raced (boy v. boy, girl v. girl) down two side-by-side fast water slides, the Typhoon, and we rode the Fury of the Nile on a round raft through waterfalls, bumps, and spins, where I got soaked right after putting on my dry clothes.  We went down the Aruba Tuba a few times, which may have been the kids' favorite slide, and had really short lines.  We rode the Monsoon where we were in a boat and plunged into a body of water.  You can also stand on the bridge after you ride the ride and get soaked from the splash.  The kids also played in the wave pool where I think they could have stayed all day if we let them.

The kids weren't ready for any roller coasters.  They did ride the Skyliner, a ferris wheel, which scared Kylie because the worker had told them not to rock their seat, but the seat was rocking due to the ride itself.  Because someone had to stay with the kids at all times, I ventured to ride a couple roller coasters by myself since I had been eye-balling them all day and could not wait to ride some of them.  I rode the Patriot, which was smooth and fun, and the Mamba, which was the most intense roller coaster I've ever ridden.  It was extremely high (over 200 feet from the ground) and fast (75 mph).  There were a couple roller coasters I would have liked to ride such as the Prowler and Timber Wolf, but we were all getting tired, hungry, and ready to leave.

The zoo was fun, but it was shortened due to the heat, and I think we were still a little beat from the adventures the day before at Oceans and Worlds of Fun.

We all agreed that the most exciting animal we saw was the Polar Bear who was showing off doing flips right in front of the glass wall.

We saw the snakes which Kaden really wanted to see.  He said he doesn't know if he'd be able to touch any of them, unless it was a garter snake.

We saw the tigers, but we never made it to see the lions or cheetahs which were on the far end of the zoo.  The cats are always some of my favorites.  You can call me crazy cat lady, or not, preferably.

Kylie requested a "kiss" photo

We saw birds, a red panda, monkeys, orangutans, kangaroos, and camels.

We enjoyed a little break from walking and watched the sea lions dance, jump, wave, and swim around.

On the way home, we stopped and ate some good BBQ at Gates BBQ.  I had a pork sandwich which was amazing, even though Keane said I ate it wrong since I ordered it on a bun instead of bread.  Kylie had a ham sandwich, Kaden had ribs, and Keane ate burnt ends.
It was a fun, yet a little exhausting (as you can see), family vacation.  It will be a few years before we take the kids back to an amusement park, but they loved the water park and swimming in the hotel the best.
